Tim Krahn

Building Alternatives Inc.

Ontario Natural Builders Coalition

Tim Krahn is a registered professional engineer and partner in Building Alternatives Inc., a consulting engineering firm in Canada that specializes in engineering design using low-embodied energy, low-carbon emission materials (such as wood, earth, stone, straw, clay, hemp, and lime). This engineering design includes the techniques with which these materials are combined and assembled, and incorporates responsible and appropriate current technologies (such as air barrier membranes and geosynthetics that allow new applications of the older, time-tested materials). Krahn, a LEED-accredited professional, also serves as an active member of the Timber Framers Guild’s Timber Frame Engineering Council, and he’s a founding member of the Natural Building Engineering Group. Krahn chairs the board of the Ontario Natural Building Coalition.

Tim will be speaking at the North Carolina Fairs

Rammed Earth Construction in Cold Climates

Among the oldest of building techniques, rammed earth uses one of the most readily available and most sustainable materials on the planet. And it can be beautiful and durable. Licensed engineer Tim Krahn presents a summary of current work building with rammed earth in the Canadian climate. His presentation includes testing and mix design, building envelope considerations, structural design, construction, and finishes. He employs case studies to explore the use of site materials, alternative stabilization compounds, different testing and mix methods, building code compliance, insulation and design for durability, formwork assembly, tools, labor flows, and cost estimates.
