Barb Depew is the Farm to Plate Director with the Kansas State Department of Education. Depew coordinates educational and networking opportunities with Child Nutrition sponsors. She works with partners and producers in Kansas to establish goals, projects, and resources to put more local products on children’s plates. The goal is to connect school and child care program representatives with community partners and producers to reduce any barriers that might exist. The program seeks to increase access to healthy choices and knowledge about where food comes from. Depew is a registered dietitian and a graduate of Kansas State University. She lives near Wamego and enjoys volunteering for community events when she is not spending time with family and grandchildren.

Nutrition Education The apple crunch off

Did you know October is Farm to Plate Month? It's an occasion to encourage healthy eating, support local agriculture, and help students and community members gain a deeper understanding of the food system. Celebrate the month with Barb Depew, the Kansas State Department of Education's Farm to Plate director! In this workshop, she engages children and families in fun apple-themed activities.

Farm to Plate in Our State Bringing local foods to child nutrition programs

Farm to Plate in Our State is an initiative to bring locally or regionally produced foods into child nutrition programs across Kansas. Promotional efforts for the program have included provisions for school gardens, farm visits, and culinary classes, as well as general integration of food-related education into class curriculums. Barb Depew, the Kansas Department of Education's Farm to Plate director for child nutrition and wellness, shares best practices and activities around the state that encourage healthy eating habits.
